DIY Moving:

This option is great if you’re on a tight budget and only moving the contents of a small bedroom and/or lounge across town. Unless of course you’re having to move a piano or any valuable antiques! All you will need is a driver’s licence, a big vehicle and a few of your friends to provide the muscle.

Finally make sure that your Contents Insurance covers your belongings for a move. If not, we highly recommend that you look into getting removal cover for the duration of your move.

The Pros:

  • You will save money. If you are on a budget then the cost of a professional removal can seem a little daunting.
  • If you can get lots of friends to help then the actual move itself shouldn’t take you too long. Just insure that you say thanks with pizza and a glass of beer or wine afterwards.
  • Packing yourself means that you will know exactly where everything is. This will allow you to know which boxes need unpacking straight away, and which ones can be left for later.

The Cons:

  • The largest vehicle you can hire with a standard car licence is either a van or 2 tonne truck. This may result in having to do quite a few trips.
  • You will have to source your own boxes. If you can’t get your hands on any free ones, you can purchase them from our online store.
  • You will need to be fit and strong – there will be multiple trips involved , heavy furniture to lift, and you’ll be going in and out with boxes. There is no denying that it’s back breaking work.
  • DIY removal is very time-consuming. You’re going to have to pack, organise all your friends, make multiple trips, and then after all that stress you’ll have to unpack again at the other end. Many people underestimate the time and energy it all takes!

Research has shown that moving house is right up there with divorce and bereavement as one of life’s most stress full events. Both of which can be a result of moving.
